Jenny English, in our sales department, has had a great 2017 so far. She was promoted to the Eastern Territories last quarter, hit her one-year anniversary at ReCollect this month, and in a few weeks will be awarded Waste360’s 2017 Waste 360’s 40 Under 40 award on stage at WasteExpo in New Orleans. [Update! Waste360 interviewed Jenny for their website site recently!]

Jenny won this award thanks to her life long dedication to waste diversion. Before ReCollect, she worked at the City of Richmond, BC as the Waste Reduction and Recycling Coordinator, where her team won the international Gold Quill Award of Excellence for the City’s Green Cart communication campaign. Before then, Jenny was an Environmental Technician at DST Consulting Engineers. In the County of Simcoe, Ontario, Jenny was a young landfill Site Supervisor. Earlier, she worked for URS Canada Inc. as an Environmental Site Supervisor.

Recycling and waste reduction has always been top of mind for Jenny. She has assisted in the implementation of bi-weekly garbage cart program implementation, organics collection for multi-family buildings, organized a County wide waste audit program, and tirelessly completed RFPs, RFQs, and applications for diversion programs and funding.

Jenny has a long list of technical skills including hazardous material assessments, site monitoring during hazardous building materials abatement activities, building deconstruction waste auditing, and waste reduction planning. She has conducted indoor air quality monitoring, landfill environmental monitoring, leachate and gas sampling, and reclamation monitoring. She has undertaken hydrogeological fieldwork including supervising drilling activities, groundwater monitoring, and surface water monitoring.

The 40 Under 40 list highlights the next generation of innovative leaders shaping the future of the waste and recycling industry. A panel of expert judges from Waste360 evaluated over 300 nominations and consulted with an external advisor to select the finalists and winners.

Needless to say, we are thrilled to have her on the team. I asked Jenny some questions about the award:

How do you feel to have been awarded the Waste 40 under 40 Award for North America?

It feels great to be acknowledged for my efforts and work experience over the last 10 years.  I am thrilled to be awarded as one of the top 40 under 40 alongside others of such high caliber.

When did you realize that the waste industry was the right place for you?

My first experience in the waste industry involved environmental monitoring of landfills, which I enjoyed, but it wasn’t until I first worked with the County of Simcoe on the administrative side of waste management and then later as a Landfill Site supervisor, that I realized the waste industry is where I wanted to be.

What would make this year even better for you? Personally or professionally.

I’m always striving to better myself personally and professionally.  I look forward to going to events such as WasteExpo where I get to expand my knowledge in this field.

Anything else you’d like to add about your award?

I’m looking forward to meeting the other award winners at WasteExpo and learning about their journey to the top 40 under 40.  See you there!
